For years, life for one woman was a life of fear. She wastrapped in an abusive relationship with her child's father, untilfinally she had enough.
"I made the phone call and I got cleared to come me and mydaughter," said the domestic violence victim. She came across thePenelope House in the pages of a phone book and arrived at theshelter with just a pillow case full of clothes.
She said walking away from him was not easy, "Because we shareda child that made the actual leaving part hard but I knew if Ididn't that my child wouldn't have anybody. I would be gone."
Then she blamed herself. But now, she knows it wasn't herfault and her story is one of many. The Penelope House provides anescape from the violence.
Its doors opened 30 years ago. Women can come with theirchildren for a place to stay and seek counseling. There's alsomedical care and help with getting a job or legal services, all ofwhich are free.
"There's a world of services available to the victims and intalking to them the advocates determine in deed what's going tohelp them through this process or help them remove themselves fromthe situation," said Martha Salter with the Penelope House.
The domestic violence victim is now on the verge of beingindependent again. "I used to be sad a lot but now it's a happycries because I am at that halfway mark of being independant andnot having to depend on a man for stuff that I need," she said.
Domestic violence is real. Every nine seconds a woman is abusedby her husband. You could never place a dollar amount on theservices the Penelope House provides, but donations are alwaysneeded.
