ELBERTA, Ala. (WALA) - A woman and her two sons got an adrenaline rush Saturday morning at the Emerald Coast Skydiving Center as she jumped out of a plane for the first time in her life… at 90-years-old.
Not everyone is a fan of the idea of jumping out of a plane at 13,000 feet, so you could say Marion Stangler isn't just any 90-year-old woman.
Stangler just celebrated her 90th birthday on April 1 with her children and grandchildren.
"Prior to that, I had decided to go skydiving after having a few drinks. Well, that's the truth, so here I am," said Stangler.
Her two sons Al Martin, 69, and Jeff Martin, 65, weren't originally fans of the idea.
"They thought I was crazy. But they eventually decided to go with me, so I guess they're as crazy as I am," Stangler said.
"How often do you get the chance to go with your mom and do something this crazy?" said Al Martin.
They showed up to the Emerald Coast Skydiving Center in Elberta around 9 a.m. Saturday.
The trio went through around an hour of training and preparation, learning the proper procedures needed to cooperate with their professional partner.
After that, they were suited up and ready to fly — or fall.
More than a dozen of Stangler's closest friends from the Veranda Retirement home on Pine Forest Rd. in Pensacola came to cheer them on.
As the plane's engine kicked into gear, the three took the steps and got on board. Minutes later, the plane taxied out to the runway and took off. Once the flight hit the right altitude, there was no looking back.
Al and Jeff parachuted down first, landing safely with Marion following close behind. Stangler said she doesn't plan on skydiving again but she's glad she did it.
"The free fall was the scariest part. I didn't think the parachute would ever open and when it did, I didn't even realize it," she said. "But I'm very thankful I'm down on the ground."
