STAR CITY, W.Va. (AP) — People in a small West Virginia town wondered for months about missing 16-year-old honors student Skylar Neese.
She vanished after slipping out the bedroom of her Star City home last summer, but some never believed she'd run away.
The truth emerged when one of Neese's friends admitted to plotting with another teenage girl to kill her — a revelation that shocked even police.
The girls had spent time with Neese's mother, searching for someone they apparently knew wouldn't be found.
Sixteen-year-old Rachel Shoaf pleaded guilty to second-degree murder three weeks ago. The other suspect remains unidentified.
But investigators have said little since their arrests. So people are left to wonder: How could anyone so young plot to kill a classmate and friend?
Court documents offer no insight into the motive.
