DAILY DOT COM - Apple Inc. unveiled not one but two new new versions of its signature smartphones on Wednesday. The tech giant is trying to regain some of the market share it has lost during the past two years to Samsung and others who rely on Google's free Android operating system.
CEO, Tim Cook, said the company is replacing the iPhone 5 with two different phones --the higher end iPhone 5s and the more affordable iPhone 5c.
The iPhone 5s features a new system on a chip that Apple claims will make it twice as fast as its predecessor and it is the first ever 64-bit smartphone. It also features a case made of high grade aluminum and is being offered in three metallic colors: silver, gold and space grey. The 5s also boasts a fingerprint sensor to replace passwords.
The 16 gigabyte model will retail for $199 with a two year contract.
The more budget iPhone 5c comes with a plastic frame that's available in five colors. It's priced at $99 for the 16 gigabyte with a two year contract. Its camera, processor and overall style are similar to the current iPhone revealed last fall.
Apple executives also detailed updates to the latest operating system, iOS 7, which will be available for free download on Wednesday, September 18. An updated interface and upgrades to voice options for Siri are among the changes. It will run on iPhone 4 and later models, iPad 2 and later models, and fifth-generation iPod touch models.
The iPhone 5s and 5c will be in stores September 20. Apple won't be taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5s, so be prepared to stand in long lines at retail stores unless you opt for the 5c.
