Every time our children eat something, it affects their behavior, performance -- really their overall well-being. That's why it's important they make healthy choices all day long. We're talking breakfast, lunch, dinner and even snacks!
And, the best time to get our children thinking about healthy eating is now. Experts say we can set them up on a path of healthy eating by starting as soon as possible. The challenge, though, is that sometimes the stuff that's easiest to eat isn't the healthiest choice. And, unhealthy choices can lead to problems, especially with obesity.
The Centers for Disease Control finds the rate of childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years. And, that's scary because there are some immediate and long-term health risks associated with childhood obesity. We're talking about things like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, bone and joint pressure. And, the CDC says obese children are more likely to become obese adult.
Experts say the earlier we start talking and showing our kids healthy ways to do things, the better.
"You have 20% of our kids in america today are obese. and, you have the better we can involve kids in cooking and healthy cooking -- so, they can know what is a good recipe, what is a delicious recipe. but, also from a nutrition standpoint and from a health standpoint we've got to get the kids involved earlier to eat better," explains Chef Marcus Samuelsson.
And, as parents, experts say we should also be focusing on overall healthy lifestyle habits like healthy eating and physical activity. And, remember, we really do lead and teach by example. So, we need to set healthy examples for our kids when it comes to food, and of course other areas leading to healthy lifestyle.
