Some days its just too rough to go out on the Gulf. And, some anglers simply to prefer to fish from the shore or the dock. So where are some good places to fish without having to go out in a boat?
Let's start in south Baldwin County and the Gulf State Park Pier. The mackerel are currently biting well. Ronnie Putnam hooked one of the bigger fish of the morning down at the end. Most of the anglers were using a bubble rig, complete with a water filled float. The lure is simply a soda straw that slides over a treble hook. The fishing isn't just good at the very end.
Closer to the beach, look for black drum and flounder to start biting as the weather cools. Gulf State Park is not just your average fishing spot. It's one of the longest piers on the Gulf Coast stretching out over 1500 feet. There is plenty of room for hundreds of anglers along the rails. The pier facility is complete with a fish cleaning station and shop.
Other places to try include the Fairhope Pier. It always a great place to throw a cast net for mullet. And, look for trout and reds here this month. The causeway is also a very popular spot to fish from shore. Crabbing is almost a guarantee. If you want to target fish, white trout, speckled trout, redfish, and flounder will thicken up along the popular seawall in October. For Fox ten Outdoors, I'm Chief Meteorologist Jason Smith.
