MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - In 2012 – offensive output was not a key statistic for the Auburn Tigers. The team scored only 224 points on the season – compared to their opponents’ 340. The o-line gave up 22 sacks – all leading to a disappointing 3 and 9 record. This fall, the offense will be a big part of the rebound, Auburn hopes to make in 2013.
“The thing we are really trying hard to do right now is identify and see who the best 8 players guys are and then if you can find 3 guards and 3 tackles that you feel like you can put in a football game, then you’re ahead of it,” said offensive lone coach J.B. Grimes.
Offensive line coach J.B. Grimes says substituting often throughout games might be a key factor to success on the line.
“If I can, if Gus feels good about it, Gus handles all the substitutions, especially in the offensive line, but if you can you’d like to put some guys in early in the game, you know – in my career, if I like all 5 of em, I like running that second unit in there early,” said Grimes.
Offensive line man Chad Slade says the line isn’t perfect yet – but is working to get better.
“Effort is not a problem with practice, but I mean – we got some stuff that we can improve on, we’ve made a few mistakes but stuff that we can improve on,” said Slade.
Running back Tre Mason, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season, will be a large part of putting points on the board. Mason is the projected starter, but enjoys the team competition.
“I love the competition, it’s like a friendly, brother competition we all are looking for each other to do great and so great things and you know we love the competition, it makes each of us work harder everyday … everybody is ready, we’re ready for Aug. 31st – everybody’s anxious,” said Mason.
