MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Hard hits are seen on the football field, but come from hours in the weight room – training for game time.
“They’re banging out there. They’re losing weight because of the heat, they’re losing weight because they’re constantly running and just constantly engaging with each other as far as fighting the battle of football, so with that, we’re in here, we’re trying to get the basic meat and potatoes loads so we’re squatting, we’re cleaning, doing some sort of upper body push – maybe a bench press – get them in and out and be efficient,” says Strength Coach Justin Schwind.
“I’m the one that’s in the lab, preparing the warrior – making sure they eat the right foods, make sure they’re training properly … I have to get them prepared to play at this level – I have to physically develop them,” said Schwind.
Schwind says that weight room training goes beyond physical demands – the mentality of the athletes must be engaged, as well.
“And I want them to be able to recall that back when it’s game time, say hey look – I was flipping a tire, I was throwing a keg, or I was squatting 5 – 600 pounds on my back, and I got through it, you know? .. I endured it, that adversity – a true champion, a true successful and next level guy is able to endure adversity and go above and beyond that.”
“We’ve got great kids, I love every one of them like they’re my sons, but I expect that same thing from an accountability stand point and I expect them to be the best.”
Coach Schwind may love every athlete like they’re his own – but still pushes them to give him everything they’ve got.
“If you’re not doing what you’re doing, I’m going to call your butt out in front of everybody, because that’s my job – if I’m not doing what I’m doing, I want you to do the same for me. It’s really simple, it’s an accountably thing, more of like a brotherhood – I believe in that, when you see soldiers, they’re here to keep each other accountable.”
