NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - It's hard to find a bigger comeback story in Newport News than the one the Denbigh High School football team continues to write.
With their season-finale against rival Woodside High School coming up on Thursday, the Patriots are 7-2 and winners of five straight--just two seasons removed from a winless campaign. Most importantly, they're headed to the playoffs for the first time since 1992.
"We've only had seven or eight winning seasons in 49 years of football here...So, a lot of people are excited," says Patriots Head Coach Marcellus Harris. His team's seven wins match the team's higest win total since 2006.
The Patriots' offense, behind the arm of senior quarterback Terrence Dingle, is averaging 40 points a game, while the defense is holding opponents to a mere 14 points an outing. Dingle, also a stud cornerback, is the leader of a team that fields 20 seniors--all of whom have played together since the ninth grade.
"We put in the work and we expected to do this," said Dingle, "A lot of other people didn'tl, but we did."
