Riviera Utilities to eliminate late payment notices, extend payment window

FOLEY, AL (WALA) -

It's a routine we all have to go through month after month: making the time to pay the bills. And when people fall behind at Riviera Utilities, it used to be that they got a postcard reminder that said payment was late.

That's all about to change.

“We sat down with the board and talked with them about it. We decided that listening, talking internally and also listening to our customers, that this would be the best fit for everybody,” Miles McDaniel, public affairs manager for Riviera Utilities, said.

That change is eliminating the late card system. Instead, starting on July 1, customers will get 20 days to pay off their utility bill. It's an increase of six days over the current policy of 14 days.

But what were to happen if a customer is still late, say for the July bill?

“On that bill, your August 1 bill, you would receive information regarding if you're past due, the past due amount, the late charge, and then also your new bill amount would be on there too,” McDaniel said.

Customers who spoke with FOX10 News said they think the change is for the better and would welcome a few extra days to pay their fee.

“I think it's a good policy to allow persons to make the payment in a time window that may depend on something they don't have control over: when they get their income,” Jim Roy said.

“It would be great for me. I don't know about anybody else, but it would be great for me,” Pearl Moses added.

Riviera officials said they beyond being beneficial for their customers, it would also save the company about $50,000 in annual shipping fees.
