Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is preparing a prescribed burn Wednesday, May 6 through Friday, May 8.

Assistant Refuge Manager Brittany Petersen says the burn is needed to remove hazardous levels of fuel and improve wildlife habitat. The burn area is just west of Oyster Bay and south of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Prescribed burns reduce the potential for destructive wildfires, which can threaten people, homes, and wildlife. Smoke may be seen in the area for several days after the burn.
