Tourists, locals enjoy beaches for Memorial Day weekend

GULF SHORES, AL (WALA) -  The summer tourist season has started at the beaches, and if you haven't noticed by the amount of traffic in the Bay area, hundreds of people are in town for Memorial Day Weekend.

With a bright shining sun, clear skies, and hot sand, many people spent Saturday on the beach. People came from all over the country to enjoy the three day weekend. With tourists, comes traffic.

Traffic was backed up for miles on I10 eastbound and Highway 59. For a portion of the day, Bankhead tunnel was closed forcing local traffic and travelers to use the Wallace Tunnel.

“The tunnel in Mobile was the worst even this morning because I headed down here at like 9:30 so I'm trying to catch a good time to go back tomorrow,” said Olivia Holmes who enjoyed her Saturday in Gulf Shores.

Others, who were new to town didn't mind the traffic – they said it was worth it for the white sand beaches.

Brad Montgomery and his wife came all the way from Wisconsin to see New Orleans, but after a few hours there they decided to find a beach and wound up in Gulf Shores.

“You can see from google maps, white sandy beaches…so we thought it's only a three hour drive so we just shot over. We have no plans, no hotel rooms, no nothing so we thought we would see what it's like,” said Montgomery.

Now they plan to spend the rest of the weekend in Gulf Shores.

“Literally we got here and I was like oh this is incredible…it's like walking across the snow in Wisconsin, just blinding almost.”

Michael Estes Junior took advantage of the busy Saturday in Gulf Shores to entertain tourists with his music.

But he says the most important part of Memorial Day weekend is remembering those who have sacrificed for our country.

“Memorial Day means remembering the veterans who served our country and just put up the ultimate sacrifice,” said Estes.
