Boater rescues six stranded on Memorial Day weekend

ORANGE BEACH, AL (WALA) -

Photos from aboard the boat “Heck Yea!” tell the tale of the end of a bad boating trip for a group from Birmingham and Fairhope.

One of those doing the rescuing was Kyle Sculley. He spoke with FOX10 News while prepping the “Heck Yea!” for future outings. He said Saturday was his first rescue.

“I really wasn't thinking, honestly, just doing, you know? Just went into auto mode… We got there and the guy told us my dad doesn't know how to swim. Help him first,” Sculley said.

After the six people on board went into the water, they were able to keep a cell phone handy and call for help. They were in the water for about 25 to 30 minutes before the “Heck Yea!” arrived.

“He was on the phone with maybe 911. I really don't know, I didn't ask him, but it looked like they had a cell phone either in a waterproof case or something, but much further off shore, it wouldn't have worked,” Sculley said.

Orange Beach Fire and Rescue along with the Alabama Marine Police, Orange Beach Police and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency arrived moments later.

Lt. Todd Posey with the fire department said the cause of the capsizing is still under investigation, but said early assessments point to a problem with the boat itself.

“This type of boat has a problem with the scupper just coming off the back. It's a valve that actually lets the water come in and out. And it kind of just floated away and as the crew noticed that they were taking on water, they went to gun it, the boat stood up and then came on over,” Posey said.

As for Sculley and the rest of the crew of the “Heck Yea!” they said they just did what any good boater would do.

“Anybody should. It doesn't matter who it is. If you see somebody out there, you ought to help them.”
