Veteran receives mortgage-free home

MOBILE COUNTY, AL (WALA) -

U.S. Army Veteran Frank Pederson and his wife Chrissy just celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary.  Today, is another day the couple won't soon forget.

"It's such a blessing and such a miracle about yourself getting a home gifted to you," Chrissy Pederson explains.

The family of three children, two girls and one boy, now has a new home to call their own thanks to Operation Homefront.  It's a national nonprofit that provides emergency and financial assistance to families of service members and wounded warriors.

"It's a big weight off the shoulders just the fact that I don't have to worry about housing and I can focus on other things and not whether we're going to make rent.  It's a God send," said Frank Pederson.

Pederson was born and raised in Northern California.  Growing up, he always knew he wanted to serve his country.  In 2004, he took the first step by enlisting in the U.S. Army in Sacramento.

As a chaplain's assistant, he was responsible for his units protection and morale.  He deployed twice to Iraq over the course of his military career, first in 2005 and again in 2008.  After eight years of service, he was honorably discharged in 2012.  Hi wife admits, he struggles with post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

"We had a lot of money in savings to buy a house already but he wasn't able to keep a job because he was having a lot of problems with his motor skills and memory problems...so the funds we put away towards buying a house...we ended up using to take care of the kids and the monthly bills...just to keep things going while he got help."

The family was living outside Boise, Idaho when they learned about Operation Homefront.  They applied for a home in Mobile, since Pederson recently took a job in Alabama--although they weren't sure they would get it.  The family says they are grateful beyond words for being awarded a mortgage-free home.

"Watching them run to the house A little boy Frankie is saying this is going to be your room sister this is going to be mine watching their excitement knowing we don't have to worry about paying for a mortgage and the kids will be taking care of it have a home and they can grow and love it enjoy for years to come that's the best part."
