MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Former Vice President Joe Biden is coming to Alabama next month to campaign for Democrat Doug Jones in the race for U.S. Senate. The Jones campaign announced Wednesday that Biden will headline an Oct. 3 campaign rally in Birmingham.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Police say a prank is to blame for a shooting scare at a combined elementary-middle school in Alabama. Dozens of police arrived at the Williams School in Huntsville on Wednesday after police received a report of a shooting.

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama musician and recording engineer who produced songs for groups including the Allman Brothers Band has died. A funeral home obituary says Johnny Sandlin of Decatur, Alabama, died Tuesday. He was 72. Sandlin became part of the early Southern rock scene after the late Duane Allman recruited him to work at Capricorn Records in Macon, Georgia. He went on to produce groups including the Allmans and Widespread Panic.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge in Alabama has sentenced a Georgia concert promoter to more than 10 years in prison on drug charges. Authorities say 40-year-old Woodie Louis Ochle of Atlanta distributed ecstacy pills through events he staged across the Southeast. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to drug conspiracy and possession charges. U.S. District Judge Madeline Haikala sentenced him to federal prison during a hearing Tuesday. Four other people also pleaded guilty in the case.
