Jayson D. Ambrose is about to embark on an incredible journey. He'll be kayaking "The Great Loop" for 15 months starting right here in Mobile.
Below is some information Jayson sent to Studio10 about his trip:
My name is Jayson D. Ambrose and I am just some guy who is going on an adventure which starts and then finishes in Mobile Al. For this adventure, I will be living out of a kayak for up to 15 months as circumnavigate The Great Loop.
You can learn more about the The Great Loop and the actual route through my website.
The short version of my route …I’ll have flown from Vancouver Canada to Mobile Alabama. That’s where I’ll be jumping into my kayak and paddle towards and around Florida, then heading straight up the Atlantic Ocean to New York and right past the Statue of Liberty. Through the water system in NY, I’ll make my way to The Great Lakes in Canada. Once I reach Lake Michigan, I’ll be heading through Chicago’s water system and onto the Mississippi River. The Mississippi will take me to the TomBigBee Waterway, which will take me right to where I had started, right here in Mobile, completing the adventure.
The total distance I will have covered depends on the actual route variations and side trips I decide to explore. However it’s anywhere from 5000 – 7500 Miles of pure adventure.
I chose my starting point to be Mobile based on the time of year I would be able to begin, which is the end of Sept. I had to start where the warm weather resides and then follow it throughout the adventure. In others words, I had to ensure I would be avoiding Canada’s Winter Season. Mobile ends up being the perfect starting point.
Although I plan on completing it in 13 months, I’m giving myself an extra 2 months for the many variables that could occur during an adventure like this. I’m not talking about any negatives, I’m talking about the positives, For example, I might come across a beautiful beach that I just want to kick back, relax and enjoy for the day. This adventure is not a race of going from destination to destination, this adventure is about everything in between.
Originally, I was going on an adventure that only the people in my social circle were aware of. But one of them had to go and ask, “Has a Canadian ever done it before?” Well, my curiosity got the better of me and I did some research into that. Turns out, no other Canadian has attempted it, let along completed it (according to Paddle Canada, Adventure Kayak Magazine, etc).. now the pressure is on! So I’ve decided to take it one step further….Without getting giving too much detail, I’ve arranged and continue to arrange some very exciting and cool things that will be taking place along the route Things you would never expect from a kayaking adventure. Stay tuned!
Several months ago, I contacted the Mobile Bay Canoe & Kayak Club, informing them of my plans and then requested their assistance to toss me into the water. The coordinator - Tracy Oakwood Lannie, jump all over that idea. We’ve been in contact for approx 5 months now and the MBCKC will be with me at the start and then upon my return 15 months later. Tracy and her group….wow, what a great group of people to be assisting me on this journey. I’m so very thankful.
Although I’m not doing it for a specific charity, I have put a call out for all those reading my blog (anywhere in the world!) to donate to a locate charity of their choice which is helping to rid the destruction of the human body and mind so that others may live a little longer.
