Charges upgraded to manslaughter against man who hit woman in motorized wheelchair

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Charges have been upgraded to manslaughter against a man authorities say hit a woman who was traveling in a motorized wheelchair.

The incident happened at approximately 6:48 p.m. Friday, February 3 in the Azalea Road area.

Officials say the victim, 37-year-old Meredith Baxley, was crossing Azalea Road in a motorized wheelchair when she was struck by a Ford Focus driven by 41-year-old Melvin Martin.

Authorities say they noticed the smell of alcohol and also located a small bag of marijuana inside the vehicle driven by Martin. 

Martin was initially charged with driving under the influence combined with substance and possession of marijuana 2nd degree.
