Commitment to the Environment: The Cool Glow of LED's

Posted: Updated:

These days replacing a light bulb gets a bit complicated. There are a lot of choices and they continue to grow.

"They're pretty much phasing out every bulb into LEDs."

At Lowe's in Tillman's corner, Assistant Manager Arthur Barron spends a lot of time by the bulbs.

"You are constantly answering questions<" Barron told us. "If you're here on an eight hour day you're probably assist customers every five minutes."

So Many Bright Choices

It's easy to see why folks would have questions. Choosing a light bulb is not what it used to be.

"Before they changed all the light bulbs they used to be the extra soft white. This is the standard light bulb you could come in and get it and you could go," Barron explained as he held an old-style light bulb.

These days you can get LED bulbs in many styles and colors. You can even get some that play music, because many of them are "smart".

"You've even got some that you can put in that run by Blue tooth. They are wireless to control to where you can so you can pretty much control it from work," Barron said.

More Up Front; Less Down the Road

Even with all the choices, for most of us it simply comes down to price. The new LED bulbs are expensive... up front, but they save money in the long run. For a higher power replacement, it can save as much as $100 over an old school bulb. So while the magnitude of choices may stay confusing, there will be pay back down the line with lower electricity bills.

Pick The Right Tint

Barron also mentioned to be aware of "daylight" tinted bulbs. Using them inside can mess up your sleep cycle. He recommends staying with the warmer tints.
