New Tech to Stay Cool

Heat is a part of life on the Gulf Coast, but technology can help how we deal with the hot temperatures.

"Everything is digital so it's pretty easy, you don't have to guesstimate the temperature."

Arthur Barron at Lowes said a lot of people come in looking to keep their home cool and save money on their electric bill. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive anymore thanks to new tech like smart thermostats.

"It has 20 programmable stages so you can go in and set it pretty much however you want it," Barron told us of the various smart thermostats.

Smart thermostats learn your preferences, and allow you to make changes right on your smart phone. One of the devices should save you around $100 dollars a year and pay for itself in around two years.

Window Tint

Something else you may not have considered to keep your home cool is window tint. It's just like the tint you to put on car windows. You can add tint to your home windows and keep your house a little bit cooler.

"You can get it to a certain tint to keep the heat from coming in," Barron said.

More AC!

Barron also suggests a portable air conditioner can be part of summer cooling arsenal.

"You don't spend a whole lot of time in the whole house," Barron said. "You got a particular room your staying in and you can cater it to that one room versus running your HVAC System through the whole house."

Then there's always a good old-fashioned fan. Never underestimate the cooling potential of a nice breeze.
