Early Detection of Lung Cancer at the Gulf Coast Cancer Centers

Posted: Updated:

Dr. Adam Huddleston, a board certified radiation oncologist with the Gulf Coast Cancer Centers joined us on Studio10 to talk about the risk factors of lung cancer.

He stressed the importance of screening for lung cancer for early detection, and treatment options available at the Gulf Coast Cancer Centers.

*Stats about lung cancer:
-3rd most common cancer
-More common in men than women
-Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths; of which 80% are from smoking
*Two main types:
-non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) - makes up 9 out of 10 cancers
-small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non small cell lung cancer (makes up only 10-15% of all lung cancers)

The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends yearly low-dose CT screening in people at high risk for lung cancer which include:
-People 55-77 years old who are current smokers are had at least a 30 pack-year    smoking history (may want to explain how pack-years are calculated – see attached graphic)
-People who have quit smoking within the last 15 years
-Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reimburse low-dose CT scans once per year for those who meet criteria

Gulf Coast Cancer Centers, a practice in The US Oncology Network, has three cancer centers in south Alabama, that provide quality, personalized cancer care in a community setting.

Gulf Coast Cancer Center locations:
