MOBILE, AL (WALA) -
The Mobile Police Department has arrested and charged Corporal Damian Colvin with possession of controlled substance, theft of property second degree, and tampering with physical evidence.
Acting on a complaint from another police officer, the department initiated an internal affairs investigation on August 22, 2017. Based on the evidence obtained, the internal affairs investigation led to a criminal investigation. After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, criminal charges were filed and warrants were executed.
Police Chief Lawrence Battiste said Colvin stole opioids that had been confiscated as evidence, and explained the three charges Colvin faces are connected.
"Anytime there's evidence that's present, and someone removes evidence from a scene, that's entrusted to preserve that evidence, that's considered tampering with the evidence," said Chief Battiste.
Colvin’s date of hire was January 24, 2004. He worked in patrol and was assigned to Precinct 2.
In 2006, Colvin was named MPD's Officer of the Month after he busted an armed burglar.
Colvin resigned before the internal affairs investigation into his alleged criminal misconduct could be completed.
