Mobile Opera presents: "Cosi fan Tutte"

Posted: Updated:

Cosi fan Tutte by W.A. Mozart is the story of two young military officers who challenge Don Alfonso’s statement that all women are fickle and can’t be trusted. They are sure their sweethearts (who are sisters) are steadfast. A rash bet is made and Don Alfonso cooks up a scheme to send the young men off “to war” only to have them return disguised as Andurians, intent on courting the other’s girl. Through a series of increasingly ridiculous plots and with the help of the girls’ servant, Despina,  Don Alfonso entices the girls to accept the entreaties of love from the foreigners (much to the dismay of the men). It all ends well (somehow) and all live happily ever after. Mozart at his best as both composer and comedian.

Some things never change. Men of Mozart’s day still guessed wrong about what women were thinking and Mozart had a keen eye for the comedic implications. The men set out to test the women, this proving, to some extent, the same theory as to themselves. The women resist at first, even when the suitors pretend to poison themselves for lack of interest. Then the sisters’ rather worldly maid convinces them they should have a little fun while their soldiers are away and the tables are turned.  The opera will be sung in the original Italian but with English supertitles projected above the stage, Veteran actors, most of whom have performed previously with Mobile Opera, will portray the characters so that the audience will miss nothing.

October 20 at 8:00 and 22 at 2:30 at the Temple Downtown, 351 St. Francis Street.  Tickets are available exclusively from Mobile Opera, 257 Dauphin Street or by phone at 251-432-6772.  Prices include season tickets to two staged operas and the Winter Gala Concert for $80/person and single tickets for Cosi fan tutte only at $45 & $30. Student single tickets are just $10.

The Stage Director and cast include many well-known singing actors, many of whom have appeared for Mobile Opera before. Mark Frieman performed as a basso with Mobile Opera in past productions of The Barber of Seville and Rigoletto, now returning to us from St. Louis to serve as Stage Director. The conductor will be Maestro Curtis Tucker (First Coast Opera, St. Augustine, FL) who conducted Gianni Schicchi here two seasons ago. The cast includes Amal El Shrafi as Fiordiligi. Amal was Nedda in our 2015 production of Pagliacci. Dorabella, the sister to Fiordiligi, will be played by Cristina Bakhoum Sanchez who sang the role of the Monitor in Suor Angelica last season. The sisters come to us from, respectively, Boston and Atlanta. The wiley maid, Despina will be created by Kathleen Farrar Buccleugh from Birmingham. This will be Kathleen’s debut with Mobile Opera although she is a veteran performer with opera companies across the region. The young officers will be sung by tenor, Bray Wilkins (Ferrando) and baritone, Brandon Hendrickson (Guglielmo). Bray, who sang the role of Rinuccio in Mobile Opera’s Giannis Schicchi two years ago, is based in New York and Brandon (making his Mobile Opera debut) lives in Baton Rouge when not on the road performing.  Don Alfonso, the instigator of the situation, will be sung by baritone, Patrick Jacobs, who has performed with opera companies across the nation. Happily for us, he makes his home here in our community where he has performed many times with Mobile Opera. There is a chorus of eight townspeople (under the direction of Chorus Master, Dr. Laura Moore) and two supernumeraries (non-singing actors) to round out the cast.  Christopher Powell will serve as accompanist for rehearsals and provide continuo during performances.

The Temple Downtown is a very unusual and mysterious building that makes an interesting venue for opera. Mobile Opera starts with an empty, ten-thousand square foot room and adds a stage, lights, seating and all things necessary to make an intimate theater where everyone is close to the action. The orchestra is placed to the side of the stage so as to bring the audience even closer. A whole room of hard surfaces make acoustics wonderful and voices that are trained to project to thousands produce a thrilling effect in this very different way to experience opera.
