West Mobile church reviewing safety measures

Posted: Updated:

A local pastor said the tragedy in Sutherland Springs, Texas is a reminder that even the most sacred of places aren't immune to horrific violence.

Pastor Brett Burleson of Dayspring Baptist Church said his church has been in West Mobile for more than 20 years and has more than a thousand members. Burleson believes it's important to keep every single one of them safe. His church already has several security protocols in place, including on-duty police officers during service.

"Tragedy and evil is everywhere. No one can really avoid it. It's an age-old problem and it reminds us of because it is everywhere. You have to be aware that it could potentially come your way and therefore you have to have security measures to help prevent it if it all possible," said Burleson.

Burleson said in the wake of the Texas tragedy, the church will continue to evaluate its protocol to make sure it has the best safety measures possible.

"I know here we have security measures that obviously we don't talk about in great detail, but we have them and we evaluate them, and we reevaluate them because it's the day in which we live you have to," Burleson added.

The pastor said he's noticed more and more churches increasing security measures on the Gulf Coast, and for churches that haven't, he highly recommends it.
