MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Nearly a thousand runners laced up their shoes Sunday for a patriotic run from the Eastern Shore to Battleship Memorial Park.

It was the third annual Battleship 12k. The race is held on Veterans Day weekend and is dedicated to those who have served or are still serving in the United States military.

Patrick Aucoin was the overall winner of the race. He finished in 39 minutes and 19 seconds. Samantha Gardner won the women's division for the second year in a row with a time of 47 minutes and 17 seconds.

The 12k started at the Spanish Fort Town Center with the finish line located in the shadow of the USS Alabama.

"It makes you reflect and think of family members and friends that have served. I just want to thank them for their service. I think everybody knows someone close to them that's served," said Aucoin.

Organizers of the event said the race raises money for veteran-focused non-profits and charities which helps provide services to the men and women who have served in the armed forces.
