(Meredith) --  Marquise Goodwin, a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, caught an 83-yard touchdown pass on Sunday, blew a kiss to the sky and dropped to his knees.

The 36-year-old NFL star was mourning the loss of his newborn son, who died just hours prior.

Goodwin waited until after the game to share the heartbreaking news on Instagram. He and his wife, Morgan, lost their premature baby boy due to pregnancy complications.

"Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan," he wrote. "The pain (physically, mentally, and emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please pray for the Goodwin family."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said during a postgame news conference that Goodwin decided to play in Sunday's game, despite his tragic loss.

"I know Marquise was hurting bad, real bad, and I know he will for a while," said Shanahan. "I know his wife will too."

He continued, "He was hurting, but he was adamant he wanted to play. And that's something as a coach you respect."

The 49ers went on to win their first game of the season, beating the New York Giants 31 to 21.
