Alabama consumers who were deceived into sending payments through Western Union to scammers can now file a claim for compensation.
According to Attorney General Steve Marshall, the payments were sent using Western Union’s wire transfer service. Consumers are now eligible to apply for compensation as the result of a multi-state settlement with the company earlier this year.
The $586 million settlement fund is being administered by the Department of Justice’s Victim Asset Recovery Program. Marshall says at the time of the settlement, more than 7,624 complaints from Alabama consumers had been filed.
A total refund is expected to be returned to Alabama Consumers. The individual amounts will depend upon the circumstances of each case, Marshal says.
Those wishing to file a claim should receive a claim form in the mail within the next two weeks. The forms will contain instructions explaining how consumers may file their claim to receive compensation.

According to the settlement compensation website, the deadline to file a claim is Feb. 12.
