Turkey Take-Out prepares deliveries for 1300 people

FOLEY, AL (WALA) -

A group of volunteers is hard at work in Baldwin County Wednesday making sure families don't go without a good dinner on Thanksgiving Day.

They got up before dawn to start preparing meals that are enjoyed at home.

The sun hadn't risen yet, but volunteers were already working at Foley Elementary School getting smokers ready to cook about 275 turkeys.

The turkeys will be part of Thanksgiving dinners delivered Thursday to those in need.

It's part of an event started eight years ago called, "Turkey Take-Out."

Co-Founder Dr. Bill Lawrence said, "The eight schools that feed Foley High School have identified our neediest of needy children and their families, and those families we are feeding.  It's about 1300 people."

About 400 volunteers have signed up to do work like clean and thaw the turkeys, move them to the smoker for cooking, prepare meals, and deliver them to homes on Thanksgiving  Day.

Lawrence said people may not realize there are people in need in the area, but he said he sees it as  principal of  Foley Elementary School.

He said, "At just Foley Elementary alone, we have 80 percent of our children on free or reduced lunch."

Volunteer Todd Forrest said he sees the need, too.

He's lead pastor at Christian Life Church of Foley.

Forrest said, "When you see a card like, maybe you've seen going around Facebook, where even on an Angel Tree a kid wrote, 'Hey, I wanted food. I want snacks,' we know there's a need in our community just to feed people."

And volunteers said filling that need is reason enough to spend a holiday week working.

Spencer Cade, another volunteer, said, "Not everybody is fortunate enough to be able to have a big Thanksgiving meal, and it's just a good way for us to reach out to the community and let people know that we care."

When asked how rewarding is it do something like this, Forrest said,  "Amazing, amazing, man. When you take your time and you give it away, it's more than you could ever dream."

"Turkey Take-Out" volunteers said they will also bring two bags of donated groceries to each family Thanksgiving Day.
