The city of Fairhope held its 50th Annual Christmas. Hundreds of people were in attendance to see the floats and have a good time. Mayor Karin Wilson said the parade had 75 floats and marching teams from community organizations, making it one of the biggest yet.

"It really is a magical night. They're really community oriented. They draw families. The things that are thrown here are mostly stuffed animals and candy and things that are Christmas oriented," explained Mayor Wilson.

The city was shut down at about 5 o'clock in preparation for the parade. Mayor Wilson says the parade is a big production that has many hands in it.

"We shut down the streets make sure that they're shut do. We usually expect up to 8 thousand people," she said.

Mayor Wilson says the tradition has become a family event that's been bringing people out for decades. In fact, she says she's been coming since she was a child. Longtime resident Irma Haney believes she may have attended every parade.

"I've been coming to the parade all my life. All my family comes from my mother to my nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters," she said.

Fairhope City Councilman Jay Robinson says this event is all inclusive.

"Fairhope is just a close community. Everything we do here sort of involves everybody and when you've been doing something like this for over 50 years, its just a part of the community."

He adds that at this parade in particular, there's something for everybody.

"We've got senior buses, we've got youth football teams, we've got churches, just something for everybody."

And that's one of the things that Haney says attracts she and her family out every year.

"Our church always participates in it, that's one of the things that brings us out," Haney said.

Robinson says Fairhope is all about this time of year and what it does to and for their family, friends, and community.

"Christmas time is always a special time and when you get to spend it with all your family and friends especially in a parade like this in a little community like we have, its just something special."
