A community is mourning after losing one of their own. Prichard Police say Cindy Darrington was shot and killed in a domestic violence dispute at her home last night. Neighbors say they're in shock after what happened and who it happened to. They describe Cindy as a kind woman who loved her boys and would do anything for anyone. Now friends and family are taking the initiative to pay that kindness forward to Cindy's three sons.

"Never met a stranger. She would take care of people. If she knew somebody needed something," said Pastor John Eads, Pastor and Executive Director of Light of the Village where Cindy volunteered 6 days a week.

Neighbors say that was the spirit of Cindy Darrington. Best known for volunteering in the community, she was always giving.

"She just really had such a gentle, loving spirit where she just wanted to serve. That didn't end here. She'd go home and if she saw anybody with a need, or needed a Christmas gift, she'd called," said Eads.

Throughout the week, Folks say Cindy could be found at Light of the Village, a church and community organization based in Prichard to keep youth off the streets of Prichard. Eads says Cindy was an integral part of their ministry.

"She was here all the time. She was a regular fixture here. Helped us her with the kids and clean up and so forth," he said.

Jesse, Jerrell, and Jeremiah, Cindy's three sons were her heart.

"Really the true prize of her life was her 3 boys. She loved them to death," Eads explained. "The oldest one just recently got accepted into college and the younger ones playing ball and the other ones playing ball."

Police arrested and charged 27-year-old Cornelius Johnson with her murder. Folks around the neighborhood say he is a familiar face.

"The gentlemen that was arrested, he would come. He would come here as well and we've been knowing him for a couple of months now."

Moving forward, Pastor Eads says he knows Cindy would have one wish and their goal is to fulfill it.

"We know what she would want us to do is focus on this kid and do everything to help the family that's taking care of them and the kids themselves to move forward."

Friends and loved ones are working to make that wish come true. They've set up a GoFundMe account to be used to pay for Cindy's funeral, give her children a Merry Christmas, and provide money for college.
