The City of Mobile has taken a step to enhance law enforcement in the Tillman's Corner area.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson joined other city and county officials in cutting a ribbon opening the new Mobile Police Precinct Two headquarters on Highway 90 in Tillman's Corner.

The precinct moves here from Museum Drive, which was actually outside the precinct boundaries.

Mobile Public Safety Director James Barber said, "It is the first time that Mobile PD has ever had a centrally located precinct two in Precinct Two."

Mayor Sandy Stimpson said, "It's going to be manned by a clerk from the court and also a magistrate, so that someone who needs to pay a fine, they do not have to come downtown to do that."

But city leaders said the big advantage will be cutting police response time in half when answering calls at shift change.

The captain of Precinct Two, Jonathan Lee, said, "We were near Municipal Park.   It was a little bit further.  It could take our guys up to 20 minutes to go to the precinct and come back."

Time is especially crucial when violent crimes happen, like a shooting death this Monday in Precinct Two on Westchester Drive.

Lee said most of the crimes in the precinct are property crimes.

But people we talked to in Tillman's Corner have other concerns in the precinct as well.

Tara Flint said, "The traffic, because people speed all up and down, like Hamilton and back roads.  They don't slow down.  And quit doing illegal turns."

But the new precinct is getting a favorable reception from people we talked to.

Jack Brunet said, "It will be easy for the people to be available to them, will be better for the policemen to serve the area."

Janine Brunet said, "They're  so much closer now to their headquarters.  It's just going to make response time so much faster."

Precinct Two is one of four precincts in the City of Mobile and police say it encompasses 97 square miles.
