Apps to keep you safe from porch pirates this holiday season

(WALA) -

'Tis the season for giving right???  Not according to the statistics.

UPS is expected to deliver more than 15 BILLION pieces of holiday mail between now and December 31st., which unfortunately that means porch pirates might be out looking to score a few presents of their own.

According to data from Nextdoor 43% of neighbors report having at least one package stolen, and over 40% of neighbors had multiple packages stolen.

Fortunately for neighbors though, technology can play a role this year in keeping their packages protected.  It only takes a smartphone or tablet, and three free apps.

Here are the top 3 apps that neighbors can download now:

Nextdoor -- lets you stay informed about the happenings in your neighborhood.  On Nextdoor, neighbors can ask for help retrieving a delivered package, report suspicious activity, and share surveillance footage with neighbors to help identify a package thief.

Ring -- will keep tabs on your front porch while you're away from home.  With Ring, neighbors can answer the door from anywhere with a smartphone or tablet.

Package Guard -- sends you an alert the moment your package is removed from your front porch.  Package Guard is a Frisbee-shaped device that detects when a package is delivered and will send an alert if the package is removed from the device.

Stolen packages can be an expensive loss: Last year, the median value of a stolen package was about $250, according to Ring.  Although retailers may reimburse victims or replace hijacked goods, keep in mind that some gifts don't come with that kind of guarantee.

Another way to outsmart doorstep Grinches, is by having your goods delivered to a more secure location like at work, a local UPS store, or by leaving specific delivery instructions for you delivery person.
