ONE YEAR LATER: Officer Jackie Tucker back in Mobile to continue rehab

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Almost exactly a year ago, Saraland Police officer Jackie Tucker was shot in the head while responding to a domestic call. She's been at a rehabilitation center in Atlanta, but now she's back home in Mobile to continue that rehab.

Jackie Tucker's husband, Aaron Tucker, says his wife is really improving. Around this time last year, doctor's told Aaron she may never walk again.

"Watching her in the beginning, just lay there and not do too much."

Aaron, who is also a police officer, says that was the hardest part. Those are the kind of memories Aaron and their two daughters have from Christmas last year. Jackie was in a coma and needed a risky surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain. But this year, there's a lot more to be joyful for. Aaron says the real Jackie is starting to come back, and their Christmas miracle is watching her improve.

Jackie has to re-learn pretty much everything, from walking to talking. Aaron says she's starting to talk and can walk with assistance. Being home, Aaron says, has really pushed Jackie to work hard, and there may be another reason for that: her loving husband getting her favorite snack.

"She loves her milkshakes. So I go get her a milkshake from Old Dutch ice cream, it's either strawberry or red velvet."

Another hometown favorite is their church, where Aaron says he built his faith to get through this rocky journey. We asked him what the experience has taught him about his wife.

"I would say [to] love more because you never know when something like this will happen. I loved her already, so I gave her as much love as I was thinking at the time, but this right here, showed me to give more love to her.  I'm always kissing on her, I kiss on her more than anything, she push me back sometimes."

And even more good news: Aaron hopes to have Jackie back home in Saraland sometime next month. He plans to have a big homecoming for her.
