MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

UPDATE: Mobile Police identified the victim as John Higby.

Mobile Police said an 89-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot on Dauphin Street near I-65.

Officers were called to the Dauphin Square shopping center just before 1 p.m. Vincent McGhee a worker at the shopping center said he saw the witness react to the deadly shooting.

"She was going hysterical," he said.

He added, "She was telling the officer that, a young guy came up and try to rob the elderly old man, and I guess he was resisting and he got shot."

The gunman has not been arrested or identified. Mobile Police Assistant Chief Clay Godwin said, "The subject and the victim got involved in an altercation here in the parking lot. And the victim was shot an unknown number of times."

McGhee can't believe the man was shot in front of his work. "I just don't understand that, as old as he was, they didn't have to shoot him. I'm just saying they could have taken whatever they wanted to take versus shooting him, they didn't have to do that."

Assistant Chief Godwin said police are working with the stores to track down the gunman. "Absolutely we are in a shopping center and that is the first thing we are looking for visual and physical evidence from surveillance cameras not only in this property but also anything in the surrounding areas," Godwin said.

Police have not released the name of the victim until the next of kin has been notified.
