Suspect sought in five Bay Minette church burglaries

BAY MINETTE, AL (WALA) -

Bay Minette Police are asking for the public’s help finding whoever burglarized four area churches.  One of the churches was hit twice.  Money, musical instruments and tools were some of the items taken.  Police think it’s the same suspects are responsible for all the crimes.

Broken windows and door frames are the calling cards of thieves in Bay Minette, who have been stealing items from churches.

“Going in and rummaging through desk drawers and cabinets, looking for unknown items for us, maybe loose change, money and electronics…things of that nature.  We’ve had some guitars, music equipment and power tools stolen at these churches,” said Bay Minette Police Chief, Al Tolbert.

The churches targeted have been Trinity Chapel on South Dobson Avenue, Southside Baptist Church on Brady Road along with House of Prayer and Abundant Life Church, both on Old Daphne Road.

Abundant Life Christian Center was hit twice, once in early November where thieves got away with a large amount of cash and then again last Friday, December 22, 2017 when some tools were stolen.

Police said the suspect strikes in the middle of the night.  So far, the best lead they have is some dimly lit surveillance video from inside one of the worship halls, but police are still hoping it will help.

“It gives kind of a clear image of the body…the body profile of the individual,” Tolbert said.  “He’s about six foot tall, slender built and he does appear to be kind of a younger or middle aged male subject.”

Lewis Davis lives near one of the churches and said he’s upset that someone would violate a house of worship and take from those that give so much back.

“It’s terrible that a person would take on a church as going and breaking into it, vandalizing a church man,” Davis said.  “I mean, God…how would you walk into God’s house?  I would be too afraid to even approach a church of God to vandalize or steal.”

Police said there will be heightened patrols over the weekend throughout the areas where those churches are and they’re really hoping to get some help from the public.  If you have any information that you think could be helpful, you’re asked to call Bay Minette Police.
