Local mechanics give advice about winter car care

Posted: Updated:

Car maintenance is important all year round but low temperatures during the winter can lead to more service cause than usual.

"I had a check engine light on and the air pressure light. One of my censors I think may be bad," said Mark Uithoven as he waited to get his car serviced at Milton's Honda & Acura Shop in Theodore.

Mechanics at Milton's Honda & Acura Shop say there are a few things to keep a close eye on when the temperature starts to drop. First, pop the hood and check the coolant level and strength.

Brandon Grimes, a mechanic at Milton's Honda & Acura Shop, said "Typically, you want to have at least two or three of these balls floating. It pretty much tells you what your coolant strength is by how many balls are floating in the coolant."

Next, refill your windshield wiper fluid with a mixture that's appropriate for the climate you're in.

"If you just have straight water in there, it can make the reservoir crack, and also the tubes going to your windshield wipers can crack as well," Grimes said.

Another thing to keep an eye on in the winter is your tire pressure. You can find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle located on a sticker inside of the driver's side door.

In most cars, extreme temperatures could reduce battery power by up to 50 percent. Be sure to have your battery serviced and tested to check its ability to hold a charge.

Grimes said, "Another thing you may want to consider is keeping a blanket in your car. If you were to get stuck on the side of the interstate, it'd be good to have a blanket to keep yourself warm until you get some help."

Other recommendations include checking your windshield wiper blades, keeping a relatively full gas tank, and defrosting your windshield two to three minutes before pulling away.
