If you drove over Mobile Bay today, you couldn't miss the ice-covered spectacle. Low temperatures left part of the bay frozen. Families and people on their lunch breaks stopped by to take some pictures.

Adrianna Rios was surprised to see part of the Mobile Bay turn to ice. The freezing temperatures left a winter wonderland overnight.

"It's amazing, really amazing I have never seen anything like this," said Rios. Her mother Sol Quinones said, "I saw a picture on Facebook and I said I need to go see."

People from both sides of the bay stopped to play, take pictures, and breath in the crisp air. "You know you don't ever see this unless you're up north, this is kind of unusual for Mobile," said one man. Suzanne Sapp added, "Well our kids don't live here anymore and we wanted to take some pictures of the iced up bay and let them see what happened and get out in the fresh air and enjoy."

Sapp said she has never seen this much ice in the bay. "Back when my children were little my parents brought them out and walked out on the ice a little bit, but it still wasn't this much."

Due to the low temperatures, the Alabama Department of Transportation is monitoring the Wallace and Bankhead tunnels. ALDOT said during the cold weather tunnel walls contract causing water to seep out of the cracks, which can cause a dicey commute.

"Driving in weather like this gets nasty," said Bryan Sapp. People said they will be cautious when they drive. "Just be safe, drive slow, and look out for other drivers."

According to ALDOT, it is working to keep the small amounts of water from getting into the travel lanes. As for the ice on the Bay, it will likely be here tomorrow as temperatures continue to stay low.
