MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Mobile Police have identified the victim of the city's first murder of the year.

Officials have identified the victim as 32-year-old Mercedes Jackson.

We understand it started on Linwood Drive and ended on Gulf Field Drive West around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Neighbors said it started with a domestic dispute a few blocks away on Linwood Drive, where shots were fired. Neighbors told FOX10 News at the scene that the victim and a friend drove to a family member's home on West Gulf Field Drive where the woman died in the car.

A neighbor, Tara Steel, said, "I was coming home and my heart just stopped because I was praying it was nobody in my family you know. I still hate that someone had to go through this. It's very sad. It's tragic. It's a horrible way to start the new year."

Police had both crime scenes taped off as they investigated and canvassed the neighborhoods talking with potential witnesses.

A family member on scene said the victim was a mother. Officers on scene told FOX10 News that no one is in custody, but investigators believe they know who fired the shot.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about this crime should call 251-208-7211.
