Man accused of Foley business burglaries caught in the act by Daphne Police

DAPHNE, AL (WALA) -

Daphne Police said the arrest of a man caught on camera and then caught in the act of breaking into a car dealership should put an end to a rash of burglaries there and in Foley.  Investigators said it’s the same suspect who was caught on surveillance video last week breaking into Foley businesses.  Investigators said he’s been caught on camera at least four times in the last few days breaking into six businesses in Foley and two in Daphne.

Surveillance video from C.O.A.L. Wholesale Automotive Saturday night, January 6, 2018, shows the man police are calling a career criminal practicing his trade.  In a matter of seconds, he breaks the glass door and is inside the business.  Investigators said it’s the same man seen in security camera images from Foley last Thursday morning at Service Master Clean and then again, clean shaven in another break-in on Saturday.

The crime spree ended for 42-year-old Daniel Earl Blackwell when Daphne Police caught him inside C.O.A.L. Wholesale with stolen cash and a handgun.

“Some detectives came from Foley and talked to him and he confessed to I think, six burglaries in Foley,” said Cpl. Jason Vanoy with Daphne Police.  “Obviously, he confessed to ours which there wasn’t any question that he was responsible for those.”

What led police to catch Blackwell wasn’t the break-in at the car dealership, but what he’d done just before.  Police said he broke into Mobile Paints, two doors down where he unknowingly tripped an alarm before going to C.O.A.L.  Responding officers began searching surrounding businesses when they found the suspect.  Business owners, Tammy and Ray Midden said Blackwell was inside their business for 22 minutes before the arrest.  When they arrived at the store, they said it was a wreck.

“He walked in and the door was all busted up and the place was completely trashed with files everywhere, drawers pulled out, manuals turned upside down.  It was just a mess in here,” Tammy Midden said.

Midden said the suspect took a small amount of cash from a desk, but never even saw their lockbox with the key in it.  He also took a small handgun which she hopes will put Blackwell behind bars for an extended period of time.

“I believe that because he actually had a weapon on him which wasn’t his and that he loaded it, now I believe it could be a federal thing and that he’ll actually do more time and stay where he needs to stay,” Midden said.

Foley Police signed warrants out on Blackwell Monday.  He’ll face multiple burglary charges both there and in Daphne.  Investigators said that before he’s taken to court on those charges, the Feds will have a chance to review the case to bring any charges they see fit related to the firearm possession.
