Caught in the Act: Burglar breaks into cars in West Mobile

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Some people in West Mobile are keeping a close eye on their neighborhood tonight after a car burglar is caught on video.

MPD saying these types of crimes are happening a lot lately. Thieves are rummaging through cars, taking whatever they find. The latest victims tell FOX10 this is the first time they've ever heard of a car break-in in their area. Its shaken them but also put them on guard, in case it happens again.

Up Winding Way, there's one way in and one way out.

"They're pretty brave to come down here and not have no way out," said Lauren Whigham, who had her car broken into this morning.

This neighborhood, quiet as its kept, was shocked when they woke up this morning.

"I've been here almost 9 years and we've had no sort of break-in on our street. Its very quiet. We know everybody's car," said Jennifer Martorana, who also had her car broken into this morning.

Cars were broken into at 2 different houses on the street this around 2 this morning.

"As far as I know, two of our cars were searched through but we don't know of anything they've taken so far," said Martorana.

The surveillance video shows the suspect walking up to one neighbors car and looking through the back window with a flashlight. Then he opened the trunk and took some toys and a bag of clothes out of it.

"He didn't take anything except a lego set that was in the trunk of my car and a play do set and a bag of clothes that were purchased from Belk that was all going to be exchanged," said Whigham.

Although he only took a few of their belongings, its still has folks on edge.

"Violated. Like we have kids running around all the time. we feel safe and this makes you feel a little unsafe," explained Whigham.

Residents tell us they'll be ready next time. They plan to install surveillance cameras all up the street and whatever the cameras don't catch, they will.

"We just all need to stick together and let each other know what we see and what's going on. If we're going to be out of town or in town. You know, just look out for each other," said Martorana.

If you recognize the person in the video call Mobile Police Department.
