Sports Illustrated cover with Saban wearing Bear's hat misses mark for some

ALABAMA (WALA) -

Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban made the cover of Sports Illustrated, after his Crimson Tide laid claim to another national championship.

The Tide won its fifth national championship in a decade with its hard-fought 26-23 victory over the Gerogia Bulldogs Monday night.

Counting a championship as LSU's head coach earlier in his career, Saban has coached six national championship teams -- tying the record held by Alabama's legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. (Bryant coached three national champion Alabama teams during the 1960s and three more in the 1970s.)

Sports Illustrated -- helped by some Photoshop moves -- made mention of Saban's accomplishment by way of its cover.

It depicts Saban wearing a houndstooth fedora just like the one made famous by Bryant. The text on the cover proclaims, "The Hat Fits."

But is that cover fitting?

Is it a fitting tribute to two great men, or does it ring disrespectful to either or both of them?

The cover is certainly falling flat with some people, and members and observers of the Bama Nation took to social media right away.

"This cover. Misses. The mark. Nick Saban is Nick Saban." That was the tweet Thursday by Birmingham television and radio personality Jim Dunaway.

Alabama alum Brooks Carter tweeted: "...bet Saban will hate it. Pretty disrespectful towards the Bear too."

Jerry McMurrey also took to Twitter after he saw the cover. He tweeted: "I greatly admire Nick Saban and think he’s become the best college football coach of all time! But Bear Bryant has a legacy that will never fade away despite Saban’s accomplishments. No this picture doesn’t fit with Saban donning Coach Bryant’s houndstooth hat."

What do you think? Does the hat fit? Does the Sports Illustrated cover fit the occasion? Let us know your feelings on the FOX10 News Facebook page.
