Poll workers pay delayed more than a month since special Senate election

MOBILE COUNTY, AL (WALA) -

The dust has settled after a controversial race between Doug Jones and Roy Moore in the December 12 special Senate election.
Now, some poll workers in Mobile County are asking: Where's their paycheck?

"I think somebody who's in control hasn't done their job properly for whatever reason and it don't sit well with me or the other workers," poll worker, Charles Roland, said.

Roland says he has been a poll worker for 17 years and it wasn't until the past three elections, that he noticed a minimum of a 6-week pay delay with no explanation why.

"Personally, I'm tired of it. I'm getting calls every day when I'm out at church, at funerals, people asking me 'When the checks come in,' or 'You heard anything?' There's no need for that," Roland said.

In an email to FOX10 News, Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis said his staff submitted payment requests to the Mobile County treasurer's office several days after the election.  Judge Davis said it's the Mobile County Treasurer Phil Benson's job to process the poll workers pay.

When contacted by FOX10 News, Benson declined an on-camera interview. However, he did tell us, the delay is simply due to timing, blaming the Christmas and New Years holiday, along with recent snow days for the holdup.
Roland disagrees.

"I don't buy that! What about the other days? What about 2016? The county has been paid four times, four times since the election cycle for the general election and we haven't been paid? You couldn't find us once?" Roland said.

The county treasurer said it typically takes about a month for poll workers to get their money.
County Treasurer Benson assured FOX10 News, checks went out Monday, January 22.
