CAUGHT IN THE ACT: MPD keeping Mardi Gras safe with cameras

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

FOX10 News is committed to keeping you safe and informed. Mobile Police want everyone to know they won't tolerate any funny business during the busy Mardi Gras weekend and on Fat Tuesday. We explore how MPD is using cameras to keep Mardi Gras safe in this special edition of "Caught in the Act."

A recent example involves a member of the Order of Inca, who was struck by a rock while riding on a float and suffered a concussion and other medical problems.

While you're busy watching the parades, Mobile Police are watching you through hundreds of cameras downtown. It’s part of MPD’s “Project Shield” program, which live streams surveillance video from more than 5,000 cameras across the city.

"We are using every tool and ability and resource to make sure this Mardi Gras season continues to be safe like ones in years past, and Project Shield is just a part of that,” said Commander Kevin Levy with MPD’s Cyber Intelligence Unit.

While you're catching MoonPies, Mobile Police say they're ready to catch any criminals in the act.
