One parade viewing location in downtown Mobile is enjoying a renaissance of sorts.
Mardi Gras Park opened less than two years ago, but the area has long been a favorite of many on Fat Tuesday.
Marcus Ellis and his family set up their shade tent at a prime spot at Mardi Gras Park, the corner of Government and Royal.
But Ellis said he's been coming here on Fat Tuesday for a long time.
Ellis said, "I've been doing this since I was a kid. They were bringing me down here ever since I can remember, to be honest. The courthouse was here."
Grace Riddle from Deer Park, Alabama, when asked what she thought about Mardi Gras Park, said, "I love it, I love it, I love it. Best thing to ever happen in Mobile".
Just a few feet away, Dan Shepherd set up his viewing spot.
Shepherd says he expected about 20 people to come here though the day, parade watching, but also grilling and eating.
He said, "We just come here because the kids can play and we can hang out all day."
Next to him, Austin Jackson already had a large group preparing for a day of revelry.
When asked what he liked about the location, Jackson said, "It's fun being right here, being around all the people and a bunch of other families. and just a good time to hang out with the family."
Among the comments from the children in the group:
"I just love seeing the Mardi Gras parade go by and catching everything."
"Love seeing all the people here."
