BAE Systems shipyard in Mobile closing

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

The BAE Systems shipyard in Mobile will soon close down. 

Spokesperson Karl Johnson said the company is ending ship repair operations in the Port City in June. The shutdown will affect 155 of 170 workers in Mobile. Employees were notified Wednesday morning.

Johnson said BAE Systems' primary business has experienced a downturn over the past few years. He added that the company does have one shipbuilding project remaining and that will continue until the project is complete. 

The Mobile shipyard was formerly owned by Atlantic Marine until that company was acquired by BAE Systems in 2010. 

BAE Systems is a global company with its headquarters for shipbuilding is located in Burlington, Virginia.
