MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Alabama's election system is, and has been secure, according to Alabama's Secretary of State John Merrill, who is the state’s chief elections official.

This month, Merrill and other secretaries of state received classified briefings from intelligence officials. Merrill told FOX10 News anchor Bob Grip there were a few things he could disclose from those meetings.

“One thing that became very clear to us, is that the threat is real,” and when asked if Alabama’s election system is secure, Merrill said, “Yes, sir. What I'm mainly concerned about is the unknown.  And that's something that we cannot predict”.

Top intelligence officials did say, off the record, that they believed Russian operatives did compromise the websites or databases of 7 states including Florida.  But Merrill said the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI confirmed there was no evidence that vote totals were changed anywhere in the United States during the 2016 election.
