DESTIN, FL (WALA) -

A Niceville, Fla., man is in a coma and will require facial reconstructive surgery after being pushed down a flight of stairs in Destin Tuesday, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

He was pushed down the stairs by a Tennessee man after he called that man's girlfriend foul names, the Sheriff's Office says in a news release.

The news release goes on to provide the following details:

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to 3695 Scene Highway 98 in Destin around 9:44 a.m. Tuesday. They say 24-year old Zachary Charles Laubsch of Niceville Avenue was an invited guest at the apartment but was then asked to leave for “being disrespectful.”

While standing at the top of the stairs witnesses say he called a female at the apartment a foul name. The female says her boyfriend, 22--year-old Matthew Strickland of Chattanooga, Tenn., then pushed Laubsch down the stairs.

Strickland told deputies he was just defending himself after Laubsch reached out towards his neck, according to the Sheriff's Office.

OCSO says Laubsch fell down a flight of stairs approximately 15 feet in length before landing on an area carpet covering a tile floor. At last word he was in a coma and will need facial reconstruction surgery, the Sheriff's Office says.

Strickland is charged with aggravated battery leading to great bodily harm.
