Mobile Police have made an arrest in a smash and grab at a Walgreen's on Government Street and Bradford Avenue. The big question -- is the alleged thief responsible for other smash and grabs that have plagued Port City businesses lately.
Police say Anthony Wiggins, 42, smashed the Walgreen's front door around 3 a.m. Wednesday. Based on a witness description, he was arrested a short time later. He's charged with burglary 3rd degree and remains in Metro Jail on a parole violation hold -- as investigators try to connect the dots to a possibly larger ring that has been very busy over the last few weeks.
At least 10 similar burglaries in the last month. Cigarettes and booze are the take for the thieves, who are always one step ahead -- managing to get in, take what they want, and get out.
Mobile Police report three that happened this past Saturday, March 3rd and believe the same two men are responsible.
The first at Right Aid located at 5301 Moffett Road. (damage to the door, no items taken) 12:57 a.m., Discount Tobacco located at 675 Schillinger Road (smashed front door and stole cigarettes) 1:20 a.m., Bebo's Springhill Market located at 3614 Old Shell Road (busted window, but did not gain entry). However, Bebo's store employees believes the same guy using the same disguise seen in surveillance video hit them late Saturday, February 10th. That time busting out the same window to gain entry and stealing a trash bag full of cigarette cartons. Only one suspect is seen in both videos at Bebo's.
The week before that -- cigarettes were stolen from the Raceway on Government after thieves bust out a window. Also, last month the ABC Store on Springhill Avenue was hit -- the thief seen on surveillance video shattering the front glass door with a large pipe and crawling in with an empty trash can, where proceeds to fill it up with more than 60 bottles of wine before making his getaway.
Wiggins has a lengthy arrest record, including forgery and robbery, dating back to the 90s.
