Spanish Fort’s new sports complex is taking shape and is due to open in less than two months. The 26 acre site will address the growing need for youth sports in the city. The first phase will include two soccer fields and a football field, but more’s to come. Spanish Fort officials hope to add several baseball and softball fields to the site.
Drainage has been put in, curbing has been put down and towering light fixtures have now been installed. Crews are busy getting the concession and maintenance buildings finished. This facility is designed to address needs now and into the future.
“It’s staying ahead of the curve is what it is. You know, we have not had soccer in our city and that’s very important and that’s very important that we take care of that issue so we’re moving forward with that,” explained Spanish Fort mayor, Mike McMillan. “Parks and recreation’s a new movement within the city…double digit growth every year. These are things we have to do to move forward.”
As the sports complex takes shape, it’s starting to get more attention from those passing by, many of whom look forward to using it starting in a matter of months.
“We ride by there all the time and it’s exciting,” said father of four and former vice-president of the Spanish Fort Athletics Association, Michael Larson. “I mean, just to have that for the city. The city’s growing and really, there’s a huge need for something like that so we’re excited about it.”
“We’re an athletic community as showed by our multiple state championships and for this…to be able to get this out there for our youth, it’s just amazing,” added Mitch Kitchens.
The work is on track to be completed by the end of April and then the games can begin. Before then, a few more things have to be done.
“The rock will be laid in the next few weeks for the drives. You’ll see sod going up in two weeks so it is progressing well,” McMillan said.
The city took out a loan to pay for the complex which carries a price tag of $3.4 million dollars. There is already a seven-on-seven football event scheduled at the new park for June.
