CAUGHT IN THE ACT: Victim says woman tricks her inside store to steal wallet

Posted: Updated:

FOX10 News is committed to putting the spotlight on people "Caught in the Act." Each week, we work with local law enforcement to show surveillance video in the hopes you can help crack the case.

Both Daphne and Spanish Fort Police need your help identifying a woman seen spending hundreds of dollars with stolen credit cards.

The victim said it all started with casual shopping spree that turned into a nightmare at the Chico’s inside the Eastern Shore Center in Spanish Fort.

"I walked out of the dressing room to go to the front to get another size,” said the victim, who didn’t want to show her face. “A person there started talking to me, and I assumed she worked there because she was pointing out different shirts to me that would look good."

She says she left her purse in the dressing room for only a few minutes, but when she went to make a purchase, she realized her wallet was gone.

"Come to find out there was one girl in the back of the dressing room, and the other girl tricked me by stopping me and talking, while the other girl stole my wallet."

Daphne Police found video of young woman in a red sweater using the victim's credit cards at the Publix in Daphne an hour later. The victim says the woman in the video is the same one she thought was a Chico’s employee.

"She bought two $200 gift cards, which is something that people who steal credit cards will do," said Daphne Police Captain Jud Beedy. "If somebody recognizes this lady, please call the Daphne Police Department."

Beedy said it is unclear what happened to the second woman the victim saw at Chico's. He says the woman in the grey jacket next to the woman in red isn’t believed to be involved in the theft.

With all the information inside someone's wallet, Beedy has seen cases like this get out of hand quickly, making it even more important to make an arrest.

"We worked cases were cars have been purchased in somebody else's name,” said Beedy. "The people who do this kind of stuff are good at what they do, and you can easily become a victim without even knowing about it."

"Always take your purse with you when you step out of the dressing room,” said the victim. “I don't want them to do that to anyone else."
