PHOTOS: Severe storms cause damage across area

A line of severe storms moved across southwestern Alabama Saturday night, causing wind damage in Mobile and flooding in Clarke County. 

The hardest hit area appears the be the small town of Fulton. National Weather Service radar estimates that nearly 10 inches of rain fell there. That was more than enough to flood streets and wash out roads.

According to the Clarke County Emergency Management Agency, nine water rescues were performed Saturday night into Sunday Morning.

In Mobile, an apparent microburst damaged buildings in the area of Airport Boulevard at Interstate 65. Winds up to 73 mph knocked bricks off of the Burlington building at Springdale Mall.

At the Yester Oaks Shopping Center, windows were blown out of several businesses. Trees were knocked down and a billboard was even leaning after the storm.

Across the street, the La-Z-Boy store suffered damage to its roof.

As the storm made its way downtown, a generator fire started at the BAE Systems shipyard along the Mobile River. The cause has not been determined, but there was lighting in the area at the time of the fire.
